Interview RK

Next up in our interview series is our defensive captain Richard Keates. As well as playing on the defense Keates will jump in at quarterback when needed if Lewis is out with a bad back...a bad elbow...or a bad knee etc... Find out what Keates has to say about his defense and what we can expect from them this season.
Last year you led the team in tackles made. Can we expect the same from you this season?
I will look to make as many tackles as I can to help the team out because Safety tackles can be key to preventing big plays. As last season progressed our whole defence adapted to the game and our experience grew. The better and better our defence has got the less tackles there are to share around. I think you will see an even spread on tackles this year as we are all skilled players. This makes the title harder to retain!

As well as playing on the defense you play quarterback when needed so as a quarterback how does it feel that Danny holds the record for most TDs in a single game?
Danny’s record will stand with the true greats. Next time I suit up in the QB spot I have my target to aim for. Danny is a good lad and I’m happy to chase his record

You’re defensive captain what can we expect from you and the rest of the defense this season? Which defensive players should we watch out for this season?
The Defence is going to be key to our success first year of BAFA. It is our job to keep the scores down and keep giving our Offence chances to win us the game. We are a strong unit and have strength in depth. QB pressures and turnovers are strength. Our situational play is also very good. Matt Meir didn’t get to play much last year due to other commitments but he is available this year and I think he will be key to our success. His presence brings our Defence up an extra gear, a talented player who is also a Ball Hawk. The rest of the defence is loaded with talent. I could bore you all day talking about each player .

How is preseason going?
Preseason has been good. The loss of the Coach and Captain changeover was a hit, but we’ve adapted to the changes quickly. Personally I’m working on my weak points and trying to become the best player I can be. Still work to do but will hopefully be ready for the season .

You’ve told us about the defense but who on the offense should we watch out for this season?
We have speed, reliable hands and red zone threats, a great group of lads to have. Watch out for Danny Meir and Matt Anderson, two targets in key game situations and plenty of scores will come from them as a result .

What teams are you looking forward to playing this season?
I’m looking forward to playing teams we’ve never faced before, such as Oldham, Nottingham etc. See how we measure up.
