Groote Bowl 2018

Groote Bowl
11th August 2018

On Saturday we headed to Doncaster to play in a charity tournament Groote Bowl hosted by Richard Tatton Kelly who is part of the Rotherham Roosters. The Groote Project is a way to give back to the Newcastle Freeman Hospital Institute of Transplantation. Head over to their facebook page to check out ways you can help raise money and learn more about what Richard is doing. We only had 9 players available to play due to other commitments. But we did have new transfer Dino Vernazza available to make his Warrington Revolution debut.

We were put into group one with Leamington Spartons and Rotherham Roosters. Our first game was against Spartons. We won the game 21-6 with Dino Vernazza getting his first touchdown in Revs red. Our second game was against our friends the Roosters. We won the game 27-0 with Jamie Lyness getting a pick 6 and a very hungover Matt Meir getting himself an offensive touchdown in the game. Winning those 2 games meant we were headed into the next round where we would play the Coventry Cougars. In what was a very tight game we came out winners winning the game 7-6. In the semi final we would be up against the Oldham Owls who had some familiar faces playing for them today. We were down 13-0 in the first half so needed to pull out a huge performance in the second half and that’s exactly what we did winning the match 14-13, the winning touchdown being a pick 6 from Matt Meir. We’d face Leeds Samurai in the final in what would be a preview of the promotion game in September. We won the game 27-13 with Matt Anderson getting 2 touchdowns in the game.

It was a great day for the Revs winning our first trophy of the season giving us a huge boost going into the Outlaw Flag League in a couple of weeks. Each one of the lads played their part in getting the wins. Special mentions to Nick Logan who again showed what he can do at blitzer putting off some good quarterbacks and Matt Anderson who was acting captain for the day played like a captain should leading by example and congratulations to Dino Vernazza making his Revs debut. The team voted Richard Keates as offensive Man of the Day as he was unreal today and the team voted Matt Meir defensive Man of the Day after starting the day we weren’t sure just how well he’d be able to play but he channeled his inner Adam Gray and pulled out some great performances and getting the most important touchdown of the day against the Owls. Congrats boys! Bring on the OFL!
