Game Day 5 Review

Game day 5 saw us host our own home games of the BAFA league at Culcheth High School. Danny Meir had a practically full squad to choose from with rookie Ben Smith available to make his debut and only Adam Gray and Nick Logan absent for the two games.

First game of the day was against Wigan Bandits. Each time we play the Bandits it’s always a tough game but we’ve always managed to come away with the win and going into this game we were hoping for the same. Wigan started with the ball and our defense were able to shut them out. With our offense taking over the ball Lewis Jaundrell connected with Danny Meir and Jake Shaw a number of times to get us up the field with Danny Meir eventually getting the touchdown and Jake Shaw being the one to follow it up with the PAT. Jake Shaw got his first touchdown of the game soon after and followed it up with the extra point too. The defense did well to keep Wigan out for a few drives with Dean Leaver pulling out an acrobatic super tackle on 4th down. With our next drive Wigan intercepted the ball and scored but couldn’t get the PAT. Half time was approaching and with Wigan back in the game Lewis Jaundrell needed to score after a few short gains from Danny MeirLewis Jaundrell went for it on 3rd down with a full length pass to Nathan Whitlow who ran it in for his first touchdown in a Revs shirt and Danny Meir following it up with the PAT. In the second half it was much of the same from the Revs with the defense putting in some big stops with important tackles from Calvin Strong and Matt Meir and some passes defensed from Dean Leaver, Richard Keates getting an interception and Jamie Lyness getting a sack put the Revs in the driving seat and it was important for Lewis Jaundrell and his offense to make sure they put in just as big of a display and that’s what they did with 4 more touchdowns from Nathan Whitlow, Jake Shaw, Danny Meir and Matt Anderson. The game ended 47-25 to the Revs. Wigan did well to bring it back in the second half but the Revs just had that little bit extra to come away with the win.

Our second game of the day was against the Cheshire Cavaliers. The Cavaliers had struggled to pick up the wins in the league so far but managed to get their first win earlier in the day so they were going into this match with confidence. Rookie Ben Smith got the nod from Coach Danny Meir to play in his first game. The Cavaliers started with the ball and with their first throw Calvin Strong beat the Cavaliers man to the ball and went on to score his first pick 6 of the season, Jake Shaw came on to make sure we got the extra point. The defense managed to keep the Cavaliers out again. Jake Shaw came on to score a full length of the pitch touchdown but the offense weren’t able to score the PAT. The Revs continued to score on nearly every drive with Daryl Thomas getting the next touchdown followed by a Matt Anderson touchdown. Nathan Whitlow thought he got the next touchdown of the game but it was chalked off thanks to Matt Anderson being offside and the Cavaliers got the ball back. Our defense was on fire keeping them out again Dean Leaver and Jamie Lyness getting some big tackles in to get our offense back on the ball. Jack Barton was the next Rev to get on the score sheet but we couldn’t get the extra point. Again our defense kept the Cavaliers out. Nathan Whitlow thought he got his second touchdown of the game but again it was chalked off this time because he’d come off the pitch and back on it before he caught the ball in the end zone. Daryl Thomas was the one to get the next touchdown his second of the game but we couldn’t follow it up with the PAT. Lewis Jaundrell went to throw for another full length touchdown but Jake Shaw just couldn’t catch the ball, trying one more time Jake Shaw again just couldn’t keep hold of the ball so Coach Danny Meir took him off and instead put Matt Meir on. Lewis Jaundrell did the same play and this time Matt Meir caught the ball for a touchdown and Danny Meir getting the extra point. With time ticking down the Cavaliers didn’t have long to get a score on the board and again our defense shut them out. The game finished 47-6. Ben Smith on his debut getting himself a safety. The Cavaliers score came right at the end of the game thanks to the second of the day Lewis Jaundrell interception.

Game day 5 went as we’d hoped playing at home we wanted to make sure we got the 2 important wins on what was an incredibly hot day. Thanks to the other MEC west teams for travelling down to Warrington and thanks to Culcheth High School for letting us use the pitch and facilities. Next game day we’ll be travelling to Chorley to play Oldham Owls and Chorley Buccaneers.

Quote from Nathan Whitlow

Offensive Man of the Day as voted for by the team.
"It was a massive day on Saturday and we knew we had to be at our best to beat Wigan and clinch the division title. I was really happy with how the first game went and it felt great to get my first touchdowns in a Revs uniform and most importantly we got the win!

We played really well in the second game and I was a bit gutted to have two touchdowns chalked off but another big win made it a great day for the team!"

Quote from Dean Leaver

Defensive Man of the Day as voted for by the team.
"It was important for us to get back on track after our tight defeat to the Honey Badgers. To respond with three solid victories and regain top spot in our division made it a great day for the team.

Everyone contributed in a big way and congratulations to Nathan on his debut."
