2017 Year Review

Our 2017 Year Review.
 by Melissa Jevins
2017 was a massive year for us here at Warrington Revolution. We could go into great detail and tell you all about it but if that’s what you want go check our Facebook page out and scroll for your life. Instead we’re just going to mention a few big moments for us.

First up is our first official training session back in January. We had some of the guys from Cheshire Cavaliers and Manchester Crows join us to give us a hand in showing us the ropes. A session that was beneficial to us seeing how training sessions are run as well as ending the session with a game against the Cavs and Crows, which if we remember right ended in a draw.

It wasn’t until the end of February that we had our first games over in Crewe against Cheshire Cavaliers and Surge Academy. We came with nothing but ended up leaving with 2 wins, giving us great confidence going forward.

We had our official launch night at the end of March where the team spent a hell of a lot of money on raffle tickets only to find out that if they won anything it got put back in the raffle for someone not part of the team to win (Sorry Dean). The whole point of the night was to introduce the community to Warrington Revolution and show the team their new kit.

April was a very busy month social media wise for us. We posted our first trick shot video challenging the UK Dukes, which has over 3000 views on Facebook. This one included Jake Shaw showing how Warrington Revolution prepares for a match. The UK Dukes fired back only for us to blow them out of the water with another trick shot video. Throughout the year we would put out videos that the UK Dukes challenged us to do – if you haven’t seen any of them yet head over to our Facebook page and check them out. As well as the trick shot videos throughout April we also announced that we’d be holding our own post-season tournament V-Day.

May brought us to our first tournament all the way in Sheffield for the NuOla Rookie Lumberjack Tournament. We ended the day with 3 wins and 2 losses giving us our first 2 losses since we started the team proving that we can compete with some of the best teams as well as showing us that there was still more work to do.

July was again another month of videos thanks to the UK Dukes selfie catch challenge. But the video that stands out the most is our Live Trick Shot. We decided to be bold and do it whilst everyone on Facebook could watch as it happens what could go wrong? Luckily nothing did!

August started with V-Day. The day started early for us at Warrington Revolution setting up the pitches that still needed to be mowed and we had to set up all the equipment for the live stream. Like every good tournament we ended up having to start late due some teams being stuck on the M26. Overall though the day was a success we had a Warrington Revolution Northants Titans final, with Titans ending with the win and the MVP of the game going to the youngest Tibbles brother. August ended with the team gaining a sponsorship deal with Liberty’s Gin Bar in Culcheth.

Throughout September and October we spent every other weekend travelling to Northampton to compete in the Outlaw Flag League Tournament. The first 3 weekends saw us come out with 5 wins out of 9 losing out to some of the best teams in the tournament. Winning 5 games meant we got to go to finals day in the Stanley Flashman bracket, which saw us beat the Rugby Raccoons and Wigan Bandits taking us into the final against Cynon Valley Celts. We went on to win that game 26-18 thanks the whole team putting a next level performance to make sure we brought the Stanley Flashman Plate home to Warrington.

In November we celebrated our first year with awards night at Liberty’s Gin Bar. The presentation started with the team being called up to collect their new jerseys and framed picture from our team photographer. We had the rookie show that would see our rookies do a rendition of “You’re The One That I Want” from Grease (head over to our Facebook page to see the video). Our 2017 award winners were, Daryl Thomas (most receiving yards & offensive MVP), Jake Shaw (most rushing yards & TD leader), Richard Keates (defensive MVP), Mathew Pritchard (play of the year), Danny Meir (players player of the year & most ‘man’ of the year) and Melissa Jevins (person of the year). The GM put on a great awards night and we’re not sure how he’s going to do better for 2018’s awards night.

The year ended with one last tournament for us and that was Turkey Bowl. What might have been the coldest wettest day ended with the Revolution winning 4 games and losing in the final to the Glasgow Hornets.

Like we said at the start of this review it has been a massive year for us, we’ve had trick shot videos seen over 3000 times, gained a sponsor, played in a number of tournaments getting to the final 3 times, we’ve won our first silverware and we’ve consumed over 17253464930 pints.

What to expect in 2018

In 2018 we’ll be playing in the BAFA League having games against the Cavaliers, the Owls, the Buccaneers, the Bandits, the Roosters, the Giants, the Honey Badgers, the Bears and the Knights. We’ll be heading to Big Bowl to consume a lot of alcohol as well as throwing the ball around a bit. And expect more trick shot videos.
